Der Plan gelingt, nicht zuletzt mit Hilfe des Dieners Chamis, der mit dem Mahdi verwandt ist und dem für diesen Dienst eine hohe Belohnung zugesichert wird. Ein Sandsturm macht die Hoffnung der Väter zunichte, den Entführern zu folgen. Nach einem missglückten Fluchtversuch werden die Kinder nach Omdurman gebracht, wo Stas dem Mahdi vorgeführt wird. Der Grieche Kaliopuli, als Dolmetscher für den Mahdi unentbehrlich, will den Kindern helfen.

Finally the deputy rector arrives for the closing ceremonies, and since he disfavors the line of thought awarded by the recommendation the tensions rise. They climax when student in question bites the rector in the ear while receiving recommendation. The confrontation results in a scandal and the police is called in.

Den Tod vor Augen strahlt Stanislaw jedoch Lebensfreude aus, die Boleslaw in seiner Trauer zunächst abstößt. Stanislaw erfreut sich der Natur seiner Heimat und atmet diese Natur aus vollem Herzen. Er genießt das Leben, als wäre jeder Tag der letzte Tag seines Lebens. Und dies zeigt er auch überdeutlich.
