The twenty-first season of Law & Order, an American police procedural and legal drama, was ordered by NBC on September 28, 2021, over a decade after its original cancellation on May 24, 2010. The season began airing on February 24, 2022, as a mid-season replacement during the 2021–2022 broadcast season. Due to such status, the season consists of only 10 episodes. In May 2022, the series was renewed for a twenty-second season. Anthony Anderson and Sam Waterston returned in their roles of Kevin Bernard and Jack McCoy, respectively; and were joined by new cast members Jeffrey Donovan, Camryn Manheim, Hugh Dancy and Odelya Halevi. Series creator Dick Wolf returned as an executive producer, while Rick Eid was named showrunner. The series is produced by Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television. ()

The twentieth season of Law & Order premiered on NBC on September 25, 2009, which remained unchanged, for which it was moved from its previous time slot to air on Fridays at 8 p.m. ET for the NBC broadcast. L&O was moved to Monday nights on March 1, 2010, with a two-hour telecast at 9 p.m. ET, before settling into its new time slot at 10 p.m. the following week, March 8. During the season, The Jay Leno Show in primetime was canceled, and Leno returned to the 11:35 pm Tonight Show because of affiliate dissatisfaction. Three more episodes of Law & Order were ordered to fill the primetime gap, increasing the number of episodes for the season to 23. In early January, NBC announced the renewal of Law & Order for a 21st season. NBC's President of Primetime Entertainment at the time, Angela Bromstad, said, "I’m a "Law & Order" junkie... I wouldn’t want to be responsible for not having "Law & Order" break the record." However, the network abruptly canceled Law & Order on May 14 after 20 seasons on the air, tying it with Gunsmoke as American network television's longest-running regularly scheduled primetime drama. The nineteenth season of Law & Order premiered on NBC on November 5, 2008, and concluded on June 3, 2009. This was the show's third season in which there were no changes in the cast from the previous season, and it would be the last season to air on Wednesday nights at 10PM/9c, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit has claimed the slot off-and-on (SVU often placed at 9PM/8c to lead other programming that later gets moved or taken off schedule) from the fall of 2009 to present. The series declined in the ratings due to competition from CBS's CSI: NY, although some episodes spiked when CSI: NY episodes were repeats (or replaced with other programming). ()

Having moved over to the third Law & Order spin-off, Law & Order: Trial by Jury, Orbach only filmed two episodes of the series before his death in December 2004 Season 14 was released on DVD, September 14, 2004 & the slimline reissue set was released on February 25, 2014. The following is a list of Law & Order episodes from the series' seventh season (1996–1997): During the seventh season, Law & Order was becoming more popular than ever on television and was NBC's 2nd most-popular drama; however, the ratings were usually half the size of the network's hit drama ER. NBC decided to give Law & Order some additional promotion by airing episodes 149 "D-Girl", 150 "Turnaround" & 151 "Showtime" (a three-episode story arc involving the murder of a Hollywood director's wife, partially set in Los Angeles) on Thursday nights at 10pm ET instead of ER reruns. Ratings for all three episodes were strong and helped establish the show on NBC's schedule for years to come. Episode 152 "Mad Dog" was supposed to air on a Thursday night as well, but NBC moved Law & Order back to Wednesdays at 10pm ET when their midseason show, the police drama Prince Street, bombed in the ratings in that same time slot. Law & Order won the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series for their work in the 7th season. ()
