The ninth and final season of One Tree Hill, an American television series created by Mark Schwahn for The WB Television Network, was officially ordered by The CW on May 17, 2011. Two days later, the network announced that the ninth season would serve as the series' final season. Premiering on January 11, 2012, the series aired its 13 episodes uninterrupted. This season takes place sixteen months after the season eight finale, marking the series' third time jump in four years. Original series co-lead James Lafferty opted to return as a part-time regular for the final season, with original cast members Bethany Joy Lenz and Sophia Bush returning to lead the season with Austin Nichols, Robert Buckley, Shantel VanSanten, Jackson Brundage, Lee Norris, Jana Kramer, Lisa Goldstein and Stephen Colletti. Additionally, Paul Johansson and Tyler Hilton returned as regulars after notable absences, whilst former stars Chad Michael Murray, Antwon Tanner, Barbara Alyn Woods, and Craig Sheffer returned for guest appearances. The season opened to 1.75 million viewers and a 0.9 Adults 18–49 rating, up 26% in viewers compared to its season eight finale. The final episode aired on April 4, 2012, concluding the series with 1.43 million viewers. ()

The eighth season of One Tree Hill, an American television series, premiered on September 14, 2010. After successful ratings for the early episodes of the season on The CW, the network ordered a back-order of nine episodes, bringing the total episode count to twenty-two. Season eight features the return of the original opening credits and the original opening theme song "I Don't Want to Be" covered by various artists each week, while the original version is featured sporadically. The thirteenth episode of the season, "The Other Half of Me" which saw Brooke getting married achieved season highs in all categories with a 1.2 Adults 18–49 rating, a 2.4 in Women 18–34 and 2.42 million viewers making it the most watched episode since December 2009. The overall season continued the show’s falling down in ratings, averaging 1.78 million viewers with 0.8 rating and ranking #129. ()

The seventh season of One Tree Hill premiered on September 14, 2009. This is the first season not to include the show's original cast members Chad Michael Murray and Hilarie Burton. After successful ratings for the first three episodes, The CW gave the series a full-season order of 22 episodes. The season premiere was seen by 2.45 million viewers and achieved a 1.2 rating in Adults 18–49. Episode 7 achieved season highs with 2.67 million viewers and a 1.3 rating in Adults 18–49. The season averaged 2.28 million viewers and a 1.1 rating placing it at #115 in the 2009–10 season. ()

The dispute led to a strike by the writers, which has caused a lack in episodes being produced. The season had to conclude in June 2008, after twenty-two episodes, but it had been initially shortened to twelve episodes due to the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike. Then, with the strike resolved, the CW announced that six more episodes would be produced, bringing the season's total episode count to eighteen. ()

This is the first season to air on the newly formed The CW television network. Season four rose in ratings, becoming #133 in the Nielsen ratings system with 1.3 rating and averaging 2.99 million viewers. Episode #10 "Songs To Love and Die By" was the highest rated episode of the season by having 4.24 million viewers tuning in and the most viewed among the entire series after season 2 along with the previous one, "Some You Give Away", which had 4.21 million viewers tuning in. The season had a brief hiatus for three months from February 2007 to May 2007, to make their timeslot available for the short-lived series Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll. The show returned May 2, 2007 to air the last 6 episodes of the season. This marked the first and last season of the show to air into June. In this season, most episodes were named after rock albums rather than after songs. ()
