Three women in a maternity ward reveal their lives and intimate thoughts to each other.

Göran ist plötzlich sehr angetan vom Landleben, der schwedischen Landschaft inklusive sommerlichem Nacktbaden. Doch ihre Beziehung wird vom örtlichen Pfarrer nicht geduldet, und auch Kerstins strenge Eltern stimmen der jugendlichen Liebe nicht zu. Das junge Paar sieht sich mit einem Wertewechsel in der schwedischen Gesellschaft konfrontiert und wird auf eine harte Probe gestellt.

Four Swedish volunteer soldiers are trapped in Russia. In front of them lies the front with enemy outposts and patrols, behind them the enemy minefields. Hope to return to their own lines decreases each day. Corpses of fallen, "dead of cold and hard as iron", forms the macabre landmarks in the winter landscape. Nearby is a burnt Russian village.
On a tourist trip abroad the passengers on the coach witness an assassination attempt on the President Hurkas. One of the tourists has evidence against the perpetrators, and is killed when the coach reaches Sweden. Another passenger observes how one of the perpetrators is picked up by a yellow car. She is kidnapped and locked up in a mental hospital.

In the ghost town Manaus, in the middle of the jungle, we visit the strange opera house (that is depicted in Herzog's Fitzcarraldo). On the river island Bananal in Rio Araguaya we meet the indian tribe Carajá and experience their daily life with bow hunting, fishing and dance rituals. at Rio das Mortes in Mato Grosso we win the friendship of the terrifying Xavante indians. After a visit to Rio de Janeiro the expedition continues to the Atlantic coast and Portaleza whose population of fishermen still use a primitive fishing raft, "jangada", for their long and dangerous hunting journeys at sea.

Tre enfoldige fisker-brødre nyder livet. De får hjælp af den unge pige Sus, der styrer hus og hjælper til på fiskekutteren. Da brødrene får et godt tilbud om at låne penge til Hotel slår de straks til. Der er dog den skumle entreprenør Gravenkop de låner pengene af. Samtidig bliver der smuglet til byen; billig sprut er i omløb. Sus forsøger sammen med sin ven Stille at opklare forbrydelsen.
