Der Drummer Ruben tourt gemeinsamen mit der Sängerin Lou durch die USA, um in Clubs im ganzen Land als Meta-Duo aufzutreten. Auch privat sind die beiden miteinander liiert. Aber dann hat Ruben plötzlich Probleme mit seinem Gehör. Ein Besuch beim Arzt, den er Lou zunächst noch verheimlicht, bringt Gewissheit: Vermutlich wird das mit dem Hören immer nur noch schlimmer und am Ende könnte die totale Taubheit stehen. Nachdem er sich zunächst noch dagegen sträubt, quartiert sich Ruben schließlich doch in einer Einrichtung ein, die extra dafür da ist, dass sich taube Menschen an ein Leben ohne Gehört gewöhnen. Allerdings sind Hörende dort explizit unerwünscht – weshalb Ruben diese schwierige Erfahrung ohne seine Lou meistern muss.
