In Tecala entführen Mitglieder einer Terrororganisation mehrere Menschen, darunter auch den Ingenieur Peter Bowman. Zu allem Überfluss erfährt Alice auch noch, dass Peter's Firma von einem anderen Konzern übernommen wird; dieser neue Arbeitgeber will Peter's neuestes Projekt, den Bau eines Staudamms zu wohltätigen Zwecken, nicht finanzieren und hätte ihn sowieso entlassen. So zieht auch der zuerst zu Rate gezogene, dem Konzern unterstellte Kidnappingexperte Terry Thorne trotz Flehens von Alice` Seite seiner Wege. Alice hat nicht nur Schwierigkeiten das geforderte Lösegeld aufzutreiben, sondern der ortsansässige Vermittler entpuppt sich auch noch als Betrüger. Doch die Rettung naht: Terry entscheidet sich aufgrund seines schlechten Gewissens, die Verhandlungen doch noch zu übernehmen.

Andrej helps the group kill the German consul and then they blame the death on the Poles -- giving the Germans an excuse to cross the border. Not only the consul, but "artistic" types like Michal are also killed for the same reasons. After these murders, Michal realizes his brother is no better than the group he joined, and decides to set his own course in the face of the rising threat of invasion.
