This early Chaplin film has him playing a character quite different from the Tramp for which he would become famous. He is a rich, upper-class gentleman whose romance is endangered when his girlfriend oversees him being embraced by a maid. Chaplin's romantic interest in this film, Minta Durfee, was the wife of fellow Keystone actor, Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle.

Der Ehemann wird jedoch bald von dem Besitzer des gestohlenen Wagens und der Polizei verfolgt und somit an der Rettungstat gehindert. Ein Wettlauf gegen die Zeit beginnt.
"Regeneration" beruht auf der Autobiografie von Owen Frawley Kildare, dem der Ausstieg aus dem Gangstermilieu durch die Begegnung mit einer sozial engagierten Frau gelang. Diese Geschichte erzählt auch der Film - melodramatisch überhöht durch die zarte Romanze zwischen Owen und Marie, die in eine Schießerei gerät und in Owens Armen stirbt. Seinen unverwechselbaren Touch hat der Film dank der Mitwirkung zahlreicher Komparsen, die Walsh von der Straße holte: "Ich kannte all diese jungen Gangster in New York, die im Eingang zu den Kneipen herumhingen, Leute mit zerschundenen und harten Gesichtern".
"The Yellow Ticket" (aka "The Devil's Pawn") was directed by Vicor Janson and Eugen Illes as a German project shot partially in Warsaw. A story of a Jewish girl forced to hide her identity in order to attend medical school in St. Petersburg, the movie is a melodrama of multiple oppression. Lea, as played by Negri, is at a disadvantage as a woman, an orphan and a Jew -- and yet has immense persistence and an insatiable ambition of becoming a doctor. The film includes more than one plot twist (the final one further complicating the issue of Lea's identity), but it's first and foremost a testimony to a spirit impossible to suppress.
