Der Maler Antonio Ricci findet nach zwei Jahren Arbeitslosigkeit einen Job als Anstreicher. Ein Tag bevor Antonio seinen Dienst antritt wird ihm allerdings sein Fahrrad gestohlen. Zusammen mit seinem Sohn macht er sich auf die Suche nach dem Dieb. Diese führt durch ein nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg von Armut gezeichnetes Italien.

Francesco gelingt zwar die Flucht vor der SS, nicht jedoch vor seinen Verrätern...

Kaum aber ist der Pferdekauf getan, werden die beiden Freunde von der Polizei gestellt, in ein Jugendgefängnis eingeliefert und getrennt voneinander eingesperrt. Durch eine List bringt die Polizei Pasquale dazu, Giuseppes großen Bruder zu verraten. Daran zerbricht die Freundschaft der beiden Jungen. Als er mit ein paar anderen Jungen aus dem Gefängnis ausbricht, versucht der enttäuschte und verbitterte Pasquale die Polizei auf Giuseppes Spur zu bringen. Es kommt zu einer letzten, tragischen Begegnung zwischen den beiden Kindern.
