In South Yorkshire, a small group of railway maintenance men discover that because of privatization, their lives will never be the same. When the trusty British Rail sign is replaced by one reading East Midland Infrastructure, it is clear that there will be the inevitable winners and losers as downsizing and efficiency become the new buzzwords.
Sanjay wanted to study art, but his domineering father, an engine-driver in retirement after a crippling injury, insisted that a railway job, with its security, was the best thing for him. So Sanjay ended up as a train conductor, unhappy with the career forced upon him, and the mechanical, meaningless life that he lives. In the course of his duty on the train, he runs into a working girl, Shalini and feels attracted to her. His father hears about his interest in Shalini, strongly disapproves of it and intervenes in Sanjay's life once again. Unable to stand up to his father, Sanjay soon finds himself married to a village girl. Life becomes even more unbearable for Sanjay. He takes to wandering and seeks comfort in drink and brothels. One final chance comes his way to break loose from his shackles and plan a new life with Shalini.

Krasnaya strela is the special train No.1 between Leningrad and Moscow. The film is set in the 1980s during perestroika in the Soviet Union. Kropotov (Lavrov) is communist CEO of a big industrial company in Leningrad. He is crafty and successful in getting a major order from the Soviet Government; building an automated assembly line. But his style of management clashes with his subordinates, talented engineers. Their potential is strangled by Kropotov's manipulative control. The government order is not accomplished and Kropotov gets fired. He is rethinking his outdated business style while on the train No.1 to Moscow.

The major diesel builder was and is EMD. You'll see E units, F units, the BL2, and Geeps. Alco is defunct, but you'll find some of the locomotives they built still operating: RS-1s, RS-3s, RSD-15s, and FA power cars. Dave shows you early Center-cabs, rare film of Baldwin's first road switcher, operating RS-12s, and the last of the Sharknoses. Considering the small number of Limas that were built, it's amazing that any still operate. You'll see two Lima switchers that do. An FM H-10-44 diesel that could have been the last in regular service in the U.S. cleans out the remaining cars from a bankrupt railroad. First-generation diesels are around if you can stay ahead of the "ivory hunters.".
