Julia ist eine junge Frau aus behütetem Elternhaus. Ihre Mutter ist Schriftstellerin und ihr Vater ein anerkannter Filmemacher, dessen Ruhm allerdings noch aus den Zeiten des Kommunismus in Polen stammt. Als aufstrebende Künstlerin bereitet Julia eine große Ausstellung vor, ihr Mann ist Komponist und arbeitet oft im Ausland. Im Laufe eines Jahres verändert sich diese Welt für Julia vollständig und verlangt von ihr eine völlig neue Selbstbehauptung im Leben. Sie verliert kurz nacheinander ihre Mutter und ihren Vater. Ihre Beziehung zu Piotrek, ihrem Mann, leidet unter seiner häufigen Abwesenheit. Er ist keine Stütze bei den plötzlichen Schicksalsschlägen in Julias Familie und nur Adrian, der wortkarge Assistent und Freund der Familie ist immer für sie da.
