The Joy of Painting ist ein vom Künstler Bob Ross moderierter Fernseh-Malkurs in 403 Teilen (31 Staffeln mit je 13 Folgen). In jeder Folge malt Ross je ein Bild in Ölfarben mit seiner Nass-in-Nass-Technik. Dabei tragen die einzelnen Folgen jeweils den Namen des zu malenden Gemäldes, etwa New Day’s Dawn, Waterfall in the Woods oder Quiet Mountain Lake.
Die 17-jährige Hitomi Tsukishiro lebt in einer Welt, in der Magie zwar ein kleiner, aber doch beständiger Bestandteil des Alltags ist. Hitomi ist die Nachfahrin einer Hexenfamilie und hat bereits in sehr jungen Jahren einen schweren Schicksalsschlag erlitten, indem sie die Fähigkeit verlor, Farben zu sehen. Seitdem zeigt sie nur noch selten Emotionen. Ihre Großmutter und erfahrene Hexe Kohaku macht sich seitdem große Sorgen um Hitomi und beschließt daher eines Tages, sie in der Zeit zurückzuschicken: Und zwar in das Jahr 2018! Dort trifft Hitomi auf die nunmehr ebenfalls 17-jährige Kohaku und ihre Freunde. Für Hitomi beginnt damit ein ganz neuer Lebensabschnitt.

Three amateur artists are given four hours to paint, in watercolour, the same scene or landscape, often with widely different interpretations. At the end of the four hours, the guest professional artist for the week judged the paintings and selected the winner, who would then appear in a regional final, and if successful would compete in the end of series final.
