Ruanda oder Rwanda (Kinyarwanda u Rwanda, Swahili Jamhuri ya Rwanda, französisch le Rwanda [lə ʁwɑ̃ˈda]) ist ein dicht bevölkerter Binnenstaat in Ostafrika bzw. Zentralafrika. Er grenzt an Burundi, die Demokratische Republik Kongo, Uganda und Tansania. Wegen seiner hügeligen Landschaft wird Ruanda auch "Land der tausend Hügel" genannt. Auf dem Staatsgebiet verläuft die afrikanische Hauptwasserscheide zwischen den Einzugsgebieten des Nils und des Kongos. Von 1884 bis 1916 war Ruanda als Teil Deutsch-Ostafrikas eine deutsche Kolonie. Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg 1919 wurde Ruanda belgisches Völkerbundsmandat bzw. nach 1945 UN-Treuhandsgebiet. 1962 erfolgte die Unabhängigkeit. Wegen struktureller Probleme, einer hohen Bevölkerungsdichte und Konflikten zwischen den Volksgruppen der Hutu und Tutsi zählte das Land lange zu den ärmsten in Afrika. Der gesellschaftliche Konflikt führte zu einem Bürgerkrieg in Ruanda (1990–1994) sowie dem Völkermord an den Tutsi 1994, bei dem radikale Hutu etwa 800.000 ethnische Tutsi sowie viele gemäßigte Hutu ermordeten. Seit dem Ende des Bürgerkrieges setzte ein wirtschaftlicher Wiederaufbauprozess ein, den unter anderem die Ausbeutung von Rohstoffen in den östlichen Kongoprovinzen begünstigte.
