Julien Bouin, a former typographist, and his wife Clemence, who used to perform in a circus, hardly talk to each other in their small house, soon to be demolished. His cat Greffier being the only one he still gives affection to, he becomes the object of Clemence's anger.
Amedeo and Ofelia, middle aged brother and sister, own jointly an old decadent, but still attractive, condominium. They want to sell it, but before they have to evict all the tenants. Of course, these don't want to leave at all. The cat (Il Gatto), mascot and beloved by all, dies and this gives the two an excuse to enter the tenants' life. Johan van der Keuken explains, "Some fifteen filmmakers were asked to make a film series in a relay style for a very popular variety program on Dutch television: each new program was to start from the last image of the previous program, developing the story from that image. It was necessary to work according to codes of the crime thriller. I 'sabotaged' these codes, following a close-up of a pistol, inherited from my predecessor, by a series of comic observations of my cat, accompanied by a text on the need to innovate methods of expression and communication in cinema.".
Children are disappearing one after another in the city. Parents are desperate, the police are convinced that they will return on their own, and there are not enough volunteers for all of them. What if the children are kidnapped for a specific purpose? The case is taken by Oksana Koshkina, nicknamed Cat, who recently returned to the police. It seems that the missing children are part of a larger scheme that involves many parties. The deeper Oksana dives into the case, the more she realizes the scale of the disaster. And the sharper her own memories from the past hurt her.
