The Bill is a British police procedural television series, first broadcast on ITV from 16 October 1984 until 31 August 2010. The programme originated from a one-off drama, Woodentop, broadcast in August 1983. The programme focused on the lives and work of one shift of police officers of all ranks, and the storylines dealt with situations faced by uniformed officers working on the beat, as well as plainclothes detectives. The Bill was the longest-running police procedural television series in the United Kingdom, and among the longest running of any British television series at the time of its cancellation. The title originates from "Old Bill", a slang term for the police. Throughout its 26-year run, the programme was always broadcast on the main ITV network. In later years, episodes of the show were repeated on ITV3 on their week of broadcast. The series has also been repeated on other digital stations, including Gold, Alibi, W, Dave, and Drama. The series attracted controversy on several occasions. An episode broadcast in 2008 was criticised for featuring fictional treatment for multiple sclerosis. 01/07/2010Series 26 - 32 episodes

The 26th series of The Bill, a British television drama, was the final series of the police procedural programme. The long-running police drama was axed on 26 March 2010 after a dramatic fall in ratings following the controversial revamp the previous summer for the show's 25th series, and what ITV director Peter Fincham described as "the changing taste of viewers". Despite a petition and calls for another network to take on the series, the final episode, Respect: Part 2, aired on 31 August 2010 - 15 days after the 27th anniversary of the pilot episode of The Bill, Woodentop, which was first broadcast on 16 August 1983. In the end, the long-running police drama finally ceased operations for good after a total of 2,425 episodes were made in 27 years. Nearly two years after the final episode, Supt. Jack Meadows was featured in an episode of Leipzig Homicide, which involved him investigating a suspected murderer who has been living in London. In the episode it is revealed that at some point during the year and a half following the events of Respect, Meadows had retired. On 30 April 2014, The Bill Series 26 Part 1 & 2 DVD set was released in Australia. ()

Jo receives some surprising news from Superintendent Meadows.

Jo and Leon are sent to deal with an aggravated burglary which has left John Baker who owns the house dead. Max and Grace find out that John's wife Tanisha has been missing for around 20 years. They soon discover learn that John had been having an affair and that his wife was scared of him at the time she disappeared. After both Tanisha and Baker's son Ian confess to killing John, Grace tries to find out what really happened.

Stone and Taylor find themselves involved in an armed siege when Alan Wilcock calls stating that his unbalanced ex-wife Carly has locked herself in his house with their young son. After a shot is fired inside, CO19 are called in to help deal the situation. Jo Masters is able to establish a rapport with Carly through an Internet link. Carly becomes more upset at the tension begins to grow.

Clarinda Blake and Tim Hardacre are seen arguing in an alley by Callum on his way home after a night out. Callum ends up being beaten up when he tries to defend the girl. When she is questioned Clarinda insists she was the victim of a mugging. It is soon revealed that Clarinda's son Andy had been dealing drugs for Tim and when she found out, she confronted the man. When Tim ends up being released Callum decides to track him.

Stone and Masters have to deal with an incident outside a nightclub. Stone ends up using more force than is necessary to stop a passer-by from interfering and somebody records it on their mobile phone and posted the video online. Commander Lisa Kennedy and Supt Jack Meadows are worried about the media fallout and initiate an inquiry into what happened when the person in the video decides to press charges. DS Stevie Moss and DC Jacob Banks talk to the club's owner about the fight and discover that the man is hiding something as they try and clear their friend's name.

Max believes that teenager Jasmine Harris has information she is hiding. Mickey doesn't want her involved but Neil over rules him. Devon makes a deal after his house is burgled and his car set on fire and tells the police who really fired the bullet.

After four-year-old Billy Sullivan goes missing from his father's garden an investigation is launched. CCTV footage shows the boy getting into a car with a false number plate. They soon discover that the false plates where sold to Peter Grigson. When the police catch up with Grigson, Billy is not with him. Grigson ends up admitting taking the boy but claims he called the police and said he dropped him off at a local market.

Jack Meadows decides to take his team to the ground to keep control when tension continues to grow between rival fans. Following the death of Yusef Hanoush at the football riot, the team find themselves under pressure from the media. CCTV evidence shows Commander Kennedy's son Mark at the scene of the murder. Mark is brought into the station for questioning. The team try to find out more about Yusef's life and soon learn that he was having an affair with his boss. Two more suspects are arrested and questioned.

Jimmy Ferrier, a known drug dealer approaches Mickey following the death of his brother. Max and Mickey become suspicious about Ryan Lacey after attending the funeral. When the team get Jimmy to set up a meeting, Mickey is shocked to discover Max snorting cocaine and thinks Ryan could know more than he is saying.

Jo and Benjamin are called out to a local hotel where a man named Mark Pierce is demanding to be let when he claims his wife Julia is staying there. Alan Marsh is found badly injured in her room whilst Julia has disappeared. Forensic reports show that she is not the culprit but how is she connected to the real attacker, Craig Chapman. Mark is able to identify Craig as Julia's brother who was supposed to have died in a car accident about 15 years ago.

Paul Rayner is arrested for assaulting a man called John Morris. Paul insists that he was abused as a boy by Morris but it becomes apparent that it is a case of mistaken identity. When the police manage to find the man who Paul claims did abuse him they are unable to arrest him without more evidence. Paul tells them that the man abused somebody else as well but the other victim refuses to testify against him.

After a 15-year-old girl who has been missing for the pat two years is found confused and traumatised, the team attempt to identify her and discover why she is there. Helen ends up revealing that she was forced into prostitution by her boyfriend Hassan's uncle. When they discover him kissing another girl, the team realise they will need Helen's help to stop another girl ending up like her.

After the body of a missing boy called Matty Wallace is found in local woodland the police investigate. Jane , his mother, claims that she didn't realise he was missing until she went to his school. His stepfather says he has been working away for several days and knew nothing of the boy's disappearance. Following further investigation and the results of the postmortem, the team begin to think that Jane may hold the key to her son's death.

Matty Wallace's funeral is attended by Neil and Grace with the boy's stepfather Craig Gant. Max finds out that Gant has a criminal record for handling stolen goods but believes there is more to the story. A surveillance operation is planned when the team find out about a possible lorry hijacking.

The team go after Nigel Wren who has been grooming young girls on line pretending to be a 13 year old boy. Jacob and Terry go into Wren's house to put a trace on his Internet activity and they find out that he has made an arrangement to meet Kelli Sutton. The officers manage to arrest Wren but there is no sign of the girl at the meeting place.

When an abandoned car is discovers with traces of blood nearby, the team are called in to investigate. The car is discovered as belonging to businessman Ajay Kapur, but his family say that he flew to India before the car was found. When they investigate further the police discover that Mr Kapur did not go to India and that somebody was following him. Mrs Kapur then finally admits that her husband has been kidnapped. The team try to get him back without anyone being hurt.

Kirsty and Leon find the body of a young woman in a holdall on a rubbish dump. It is soon discovered that the body is that of Luisa Dias, a Venezuelan woman. The team learn that the night before she drowned. Her boyfriend Dominic Fisher and their son Paulo are nowhere to be found when Kirsty and Leo show up at the flat they shared but it looks like it is the place that she drowned at. The woman's brother, Roberto shows up at the flat and Leon has to break the news to him about his sister's death. When DI Manson manages to get hold of Fisher on the phone he admits to killing Luisa. After things take a dramatic turn, Kirsty and Leon end up spending the evening together.

Leon and Nate discover a woman named Jane Connor, badly injured next to a car. Jodie Knox who is suspected of being a passenger in the car ends up being arrested. She ends up naming Ashley Johnson as the driver and he is arrested. Leon ends up taking matters into his own hands.

Callum and Kirsty are called out to the home of elderly widow called Jill Peters after her neighbour David Townsend reports a disturbance at the house. The woman claims that her home has been burgled but when she is questioned further she claims that she was raped. She refuses to let a doctor take a DNA sample making it impossible for the team to build a case. A new witness ends up coming forward with a description of a suspect that ends up matching David Townsend.

Carter investigates the murder of Liam Powell after his body is found badly beaten. It is soon discovered that he had been drinking on the night of his murder but the pub landlord and his girlfriend Louisa claim that CCTV cameras at the pub are broken. When the police search Liam's home they discover his two young children living there in complete squalor. The team soon find out that Louisa and Liam had been having an affair.

Taylor and Knight are called to the home of Fiona and Howard Walsh by a neighbour who has not seen them for several days. When they go into the house the place has been ransacked and the Walsh's car is missing and their mobile phones turned off. After Eddie Olosunje discovers that the house alarm was disabled and the safe opened it seems there may be more to the case.

The team have to go to a house where a young woman, Zoe Richards, has been discovered unconscious. The officers soon discover that the place is a brothel and that Zoe and her housemates are prostitutes working there. Dylan Prest, a known drug dealer and pimp,shows up at the hospital to see Zoe and says that he is dating her. The police have no choice but to release Dylan due to lack of evidence and the case is closed until Zoe's father ends up taking matters into his own hands.

The police learn from his mum that he was a member of the Parkway Crew gang and CCTV footage shows that he was working for them as a mule. Mickey contacts Jasmine Harris, an informant he knows who was seen near the place the stabbing took place. After she is brought in to be questioned she ends up admitting that Carlos Miller felt he'd been disrespected by Liam. After Carlos is arrested and Jasmine is released on bail Mickey is concerned the gang will go after her to get revenge.

The 25th series of The Bill, a British television drama, was the penultimate series of the programme. This series saw the show transition to a post-watershed time slot of 9pm, dropping from two episodes to one week-by-week as ITV aimed to save up to £65 million. Producers used the post-watershed slot to introduce "darker, more gritty" storylines. DI Samantha Nixon left prior to the transition, after seven years on the show, in a special two-parter storyline that included a cameo appearance by her daughter Abigail (Georgia Tennant), who was a recurring character on the show from 2002 to 2005. A six-part storyline came as part of the end of the twice-weekly episodes, Conviction, that concluded with four cast members leaving, including Superintendent John Heaton; DCI Jack Meadows was promoted into the role. The four characters were part of seven who left as part of the revamp, however the axing of Graham Cole as PC Tony Stamp after 22 years on the show proved controversial, with producers stating Cole was "too old" for the new-look show. In addition to seeing ten characters leave the show, it is the only series in the show's history not to have a new arrival. On 30 April 2014, The Bill Series 25 Part 1-3 DVD set was released (in Australia). ()

The death on-screen led to the resignation of the longest serving character, PC Reg Hollis, his controversial exit off-screen after actor Jeff Stewart attempted suicide on set, after being axed by producers following 24 years on the show. Another long-term character, Inspector Gina Gold, left the show after six years as part of the aftermath of the storyline, Gold retiring after becoming increasingly terrified at the thought of losing another officer. In the autumn, The Bill celebrated its 25th anniversary with scenes aired in Germany as part of a crossover with Leipzig Homicide to investigate the abduction of a German national in London. There was also a special documentary hosted by Martin Kemp, "The Bill Made Me Famous”, featuring interviews with the most famous guest stars to have featured on the show including Roger Daltrey, Lynda Bellingham and Les Dennis, along with a number of past and present characters from the show. The series consisted of 92 episodes, and saw the conclusion of two long running-storylines, the disappearance of schoolgirl Amy Tennant and DC Zain Nadir’s undercover drug sting, prior to the return of single-themed episodes, removing much of the serialiased format formally introduced in 2002 under producer Paul Marquess; episode titles also started appearing on screen again from Episode 20 onwards. Several episodes were aired out of production order, most notably the final parts of the six episodes for the Zain storyline. Despite at the time not even being billed for broadcast, and the 'previously' and 'next time' segments not matching the episodes around them, the episodes were brought forward due to heavy demand from the British viewing public. This also meant that the 'previously' and 'next time' segments on the subsequent episodes had to be re-edited to show this, and that two small additional scenes had to be recorded to be placed into Episode 480 to reference the death of PC Honey Harman. Series 22 of British television drama The Bill was broadcast from 4 January until 28 December 2006. The series consisted of 91 episodes, as two episodes from the series remain unaired after the master tapes were stolen in a robbery at the show's recording studios in November 2006. Under new producer Johnathan Young, this series saw the programme begin to step away from the serialised format, and return much of the focus to the actual policing aspect of the programme, removing the more 'soap' feel previously introduced by Paul Marquess. Most episodes consisted of two parallel stories running at the same time, much like the initial transition to hour-long episodes in 1998. However, some episodes feature entirely on one story, beginning the move back to single-themed episodes as part of a plan to completely remove serialisation - which did not take place until 2007. The series also saw a large portion of cast changes in the first few months, with a number of characters previously introduced by Marquess being axed to make way for new blood - many of them support staff and non-police officer characters. Series 21 of British television drama The Bill was broadcast from 5 January until 29 December 2005. The series consisted of 106 episodes, making it the series with the highest number of episodes in the show's final decade, tied with series 19. Joint-longest serving cast member, DC Jim Carver (Mark Wingett), exited the show after 21 years, having been with the show since its first ever episode; he was the sixth character with over ten years on the series to have exited in the previous three years. It followed the events of the third Sun Hill station fire. As was the case in 1990 and 2002, a redevelopment to a large part of the station set was explained by an explosion, racist PCSO Colin Fairfax driving a van into the station reception to shift the blame for a terror attack onto the local Asian community; the fire led to three characters being killed off. The death of Carver's best friend in the blaze, DC Ken Drummond, came before the revelation that his estranged wife June Ackland had an affair with experienced PC Roger Valentine. Ackland, co-protagonist with Carver in the series pilot Woodentop, was involved in a 30-minute special episode that ended with Carver's exit. 01/01/2003Season 19 - 105 episodes

Series 19 of British television drama The Bill was broadcast from 1 January until 31 December 2003. The series consisted of 106 episodes, being the longest series broadcast during the show's final decade, and also included the show's first live broadcast, "Fatal Consequences". This series built upon the serialized format previously introduced by new producer Paul Marquess in Series 18, with the series following on from the previous series by removing and replacing a mass number of characters. The most high-profile exit was that of Sergeant Matt Boyden, whose death was part of a crossover with new spin-off series Murder Investigation Team. Actor Tony O'Callaghan, who was with the show for 12 years, became the fourth character with over ten years on the show to have been written out in the 18 months since Marquess took over, with three of those four characters being killed off. This series saw the show celebrate its 20th anniversary on air with both a live episode and an episode featuring one of the show's most ambitious stunts to date, where PC Des Taviner is supposedly killed in an explosion in a gas tower after being exposed as the culprit of the Sun Hill fire, which claimed the lives of six officers back in April 2002. Series 18 of British television drama The Bill consisted of 86 episodes, broadcast between 3 January and 31 December 2002. This series marked a massive change for the show, after it received a new executive producer, Paul Marquess. Series 18 became the first series to be broadcast in serial format, and generally, only one episode was broadcast per week. The style of the programme also noticeably changes, becoming less police procedural and more "soap opera". This meant that the personal lives of characters were regularly explored for the first time, meaning several characters had family members or partners introduced, casting that rarely happened prior to the Marquess era. The show also dropped on-screen titles for the first time in the show's history, the last of which being the episode 'Quinnan: Part 6'. That six-part plot led to the departure of long serving character, PC Dave Quinnan, as actor Andrew Paul exited the series after 12 years. Unlike Paul, who left voluntarily, many of the early departures were enforced as Marquess dismissed a total of eight characters to make way for a major revamp of the cast as part of the move to a soap-opera style series. Series 17 of British television drama The Bill consisted of 92 episodes, broadcast between 5 January and 21 December 2001. As well as 85 regular episodes, the series also included a spinoff Beech is Back, following a special 90-minute episode in Australia. The story follows ex-Sun Hill officer Claire Stanton, now a DI, as she goes to Australia to try and extradite ex-DS Don Beech for the murder of his colleague John Boulton. The spinoff that follows concludes the Beech storyline, which began in Series 16. Although the idea of making the series into a serial drama did not fully take effect until April 2002, many of the stories in the latter half of the year were multi-part stories, some containing up to six episodes, such as the "Night Games" saga. The two-part episode "Lifelines" is the last two-parter to feature in the series until the return of episode titles in 2007. On 14 August 2013, The Bill Series 17 Part 1 & 2 and The Bill Series 17 Part 3 & 4 DVD sets were released (in Australia). The story follows ex-Sun Hill officer Claire Stanton, now a DI, as she goes to Australia to try and extradite ex-DS Don Beech for the murder of his colleague John Boulton. The spinoff that follows concludes the Beech storyline, which began in Series 16. Although the idea of making the series into a serial drama did not fully take effect until April 2002, many of the stories in the latter half of the year were multi-part stories, some containing up to six episodes, such as the "Night Games" saga. The two-part episode "Lifelines" is the last two-parter to feature in the series until the return of episode titles in 2007.

The series began with the appointment of new executive producer Richard Handford, who replaced Michael Chapman after his 9-year reign came to an end in the previous series. The appointment preceded discussions with broadcaster ITV about returning to the format of hour-long episodes, which the show last used on a regular basis in 1987. The request was approved, and hour-long episodes began to air twice weekly beginning in August, a format the series retained until moving to a later time-slot in 2009. Due to the rapid transition, several of the first hour-long episodes were originally written for the half-hour time-slot, and thus, some episodes contain two completely different stories, written by different writers, which jump from one to another.
