1993: Athena Barnes, an actress/singer that's hoping to become famous, is throwing a party in the East Village. Her friend, Gregory Paget, is attending. Gregory has hopes of becoming a filmmaker in the future. Along with Gregory is Josh Adler and Joe Rivera, with whom he shares an apartment with. Josh's dad is a very wealthy real estate dealer and Joe is working on becoming a lawyer. One of Athena's friends from yoga class, Beth Greenway, also attends the paty. Beth is a teacher. Josh and Joe both go after Beth and try to win a date with her. Their plans are interrupted when a man with a gun decides he'd like to join the party, too. 2001: Joe and Beth are now married and live in a lavish apartment in New York. They also have a three year old son named Tyler. Joe has become a lawyer and is in the middle of a big case, defending a very powerful man on the charge of murder. 1993: Josh and Beth begin dating. Josh tries to impress Beth with the fact that he works on real estate projects that help out people with low incomes. While having lunch with Beth in one of the complexes that is being renovated, Josh is schocked to find out that a Union representative is now working with his father, Russ Adler. Russ has now had all of the locals that were working on the project fired. After Beth visits Josh at his shared apartment, she and Joe wait outside to get a cab. They decide to put their first meeting in the past and start over. It's pretty clear that there's a little something more going on between them. 2001: Joe is still very busy with the Brackett trial. Meanwhile, Beth is up for house-hunting and has finally convinced Joe to look at some houses out in the country in Millbrook. 1993: Athena is getting ready for an audition. However, she feels pretty insecure about her acting. Gregory tries to coach her and make her more confident about her acting. After they rehearse and Gregory talks to her, she feels like she would be perfect playing Cora in ""The Iceman Cometh."" When Athena gets to the audition, she realizes that she's not auditioning for the role of Cora, but for the role of Maggie. She is not prepared for the new role at all. The director, Randy Gendel, leaves Athena feeling worthless. Gregory talks to Athena yet again and makes her feel like she should ask for a second chance. When she does get a second chance, it's not clear how far she'll have to go in order to win the role. Meanwhile, Carlito Rivera, Joe's brother, is trying to get a job working in the mailroom at Joe's firm. Joe is reluctant to help his brother out, figuring that Carlito would make him look bad. 1993: Joe Rivera solves an environmental lawsuit and one of his superiors, Andersen takes credit for it. When hanging out with Josh, Beth, Gregory, and Athena, he runs into his brother, Carlito. Joe discovers that Carlito weighs in on Joe's situation with Andersen. Josh continues to try and have sex with Beth but ends up partying instead. 2001: Joe ends up staying at the office (even after promising Beth they would both go to Millbrook to look at new houses) because of new developments in the Edgar Brackett murder case. When Joe comes home, he discovered that Beth has bought a home in Millbrook without him. 2008: Frannie Batista, Joe's campaign manager, talks Josh into letting Joe hold a fund raiser at the Josh's restaurant. (Even though Joe and Josh's friendship is rocky). Josh's attention isn't focused on Frannie, however, because he's got another problem that needs attention. Josh confronts Janine, his pastry chef, about her flirting with him.

1993: Beth's runs into her ex-fiance, Booth Danforth. When Booth tries his old ways with Beth, she runs to Joe explaining the relationship. Joe confesses to her that he doesn't feel like he's on the same team with his law firm. When they are about to explain why they have been avoiding eachother, Gregory interupts and notices their vibe towards one another. Beth stands up to Booth and sleeps with Josh. 2001: Beth, Joe, and their son Tyler, take a weekend trip at their country home. Tyler has an asthma attack and Joe realizes he forgot to check Tyler's inhaler before they left. Tyler comes out of it fine and Joe realizes he hasn't been a good father lately. This brings Beth and Joe closer together. When Josh dates Gregory's friend, he suspects her of being a transvestite. 2008: When Athena is rehearsing for a Gay Alliance fund raiser Josh is hosting, Gregory discovers her using a drug called ""slag"". 1993: Athena gets a lead in an off-off-off Broadway play but is upset because she knows the show is crap and feels no one would come to see it. Gregory calls on a college friend, Stokely Mullins, to get an audience and a critic from a local paper to catch Athena's performance. Stokely tells Gregory that she wants to produce his film with help from German investors. An unsure Gregory has doubts because he hasn't finished the script. Athena gives gregory support and assures him everything will work out. 2001: When Beth runs into to Chloe (The women who Beth caught her ex-husband Booth having an affair with), she invites her and Booth to dinner. When Beth has doubts, Josh encourages her to go through with it so she can have closure. At dinner, Beth sees that Booth is a sad and bitter drunk because of the fact that he hasn't found work since his teaching job at a university. Beth realizes she has no pity for him. In 1993, Gregory has started pre-production on his movie, and the loft is in chaos. Athena wants to go over the script, the crew is blowing fuses, and Gregory can't get an actress to do a nude scene. He gets lucky and finds a girl hanging around the set named Valerie, and she agrees to help him out. Athena, meanwhile, gets a call from Randy Gendel, a theater director who didn't give her a part in ""The Iceman Cometh,"" even after she slept with him (Episode #104). Athena is apprehensive to talk to him, but he's got a role for her in an off Broadway play and it could be a huge break. Athena meets with Gendel, and realizes that in order to do the play she'll have to drop out of Gregory's movie. When Athena tells Gregory this, he loses it. He can't believe Athena would bail out on him especially since she knows how much the movie means to him. Russ Adler has a couple of tidbits he wants Joe to tell Josh: first, that he's shutting down Josh's townhouse rehab project, and second, Beth has to sign a pre-nuptual agreement before she can marry Josh. Joe draws the line at the pre-nup, and tells Russ that he is going to have to talk to Josh himself. Russ concedes. Feeling good about his relationship with Russ Adler, Joe decides to take a major career risk and goes to Paul Fishelson, senior partner at the law firm, to leverage his relationship with Russ into a partnership at the firm. Fishelson tells him that he has to take such a proposal to the partners' council and will have to get back to him. In the midst of all this, Joe discovers Carlito drunk at the office. Josh however manages to lift Gregory's funk - if not his own - by offering to finance Gregory's film. Meanwhile, Josh and Valerie are enjoying their honeymoon at Russ' penthouse when Russ walks in to find them naked, stoned, and - surprise - married.
