The fourth and final season of the fantasy-comedy television series The Good Place, created by Michael Schur, was ordered by NBC on December 4, 2018. The season premiered on September 26, 2019, and consisted of 14 episodes. The season is produced by Fremulon, 3 Arts Entertainment, and Universal Television. The series focuses on Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell), a deceased young woman who wakes up in the afterlife and is welcomed by Michael (Ted Danson) to "the Good Place" in reward for her righteous life; however, she eventually discovers that Michael's "Good Place" is a hoax, and she is actually in the "Bad Place", to be psychologically and emotionally tortured by her fellow afterlife residents. Eleanor and Michael claim that "the points system" for assigning humans to the Good Place or Bad Place is fundamentally flawed; in the real world, assigning a certain action as categorically Good or Bad is practically impossible due to unintended consequences. In the fourth season, they are given a chance to prove their hypothesis. They design an experiment meant to demonstrate that humans in a simulated Good Place can show moral development. One of the experiment subjects is Eleanor's boyfriend, Chidi (William Jackson Harper), who has volunteered to have his memory erased to preserv...

The experiment on self-improvement in the afterlife begins. Shawn repeatedly tries to sabotage the experiment, first by sending a demon to impersonate one of the test subjects, and then by having a Bad Janet impersonate Janet. Once these deceptions have been uncovered, the four human test subjects are Chidi himself, Simone, gossip columnist John, and entitled chauvinist Brent. Eleanor and the rest of the team encourage the four to become friends, study ethics together, and improve as people. By the conclusion of the year-long experiment, all but Brent have shown moral improvement, and even Brent shows potential for change at the last minute. The Judge decides that the afterlife system is indeed flawed—but to mend it, all of humanity must be erased from existence.

At the end of Season 2, Michael appeared in front of the Judge, also to argue that the humans may have been judged unfairly, and deserve a second chance. With a snap of her fingers, the Judge sent the humans back to Earth, in a new timeline where they never died. Also seeking redemption, along with Eleanor, are Senegalese philosopher Chidi Anagonye, who is tortured by decision-making; elegant Pakistani-British socialite Tahani Al-Jamil, and dance-obsessed Floridian Jason Mendoza. Michael is aided by Janet, a human-esque repository for all of the knowledge in the universe. However, when Michael and Janet begin interfering with the humans' lives, to make sure they wind up in The Good Place, they're going against the Judge's orders and on borrowed time. When The Bad Place gets involved, Michael and Janet must ask themselves, just how far they'll go to keep the humans out of The Bad Place.
