Omar Sharif (born Michel Yusef Dimitri Chalhoub; April 10, 1932 – July 10, 2015) was an Egyptian actor, generally regarded as one of his country's greatest male film stars. He began his career in his native country in the 1950s, but is best known for his appearances in British, American, French, and Italian productions. His career encompassed over 100 films spanning 50 years and brought him many accolades including three Golden Globe Awards and a César Award for Best Actor.In 1954, Sharif began his acting career in Youssef Chahine's Struggle in the Valley with Faten Hamama, who shared a kiss with him although she had previously refused to kiss on screen. The two fell in love; Sharif converted to Islam, changed his name, and married her. Their marriage sparked a new iconic era in Egyptian cinema, as they came to represent the industry’s dream couple for years, starring in many romantic roles together. They had one son, Tarek Sharif, born in 1957, who appeared in Doctor Zhivago as Yuri at the age of eight. The couple separated in 1966 and their marriage ended in divorce in 1974. Sharif never remarried; he stated that after his divorce he never fell in love with another woman again.Sharif played opposite Peter O'Toole as Sherif Ali in the David Lean epic Lawrence of Arabia (1962), which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, and portrayed the title role in Lean's Doctor Zhivago (1965), earning him the Golden Globe for Best Actor. He made his final film appearance in 2013 with Laïla Marrakchi's Rock the Casbah.Sharif spoke five languages: Arabic, English, French, Italian, and Spanish. He bridled at travel restrictions imposed by the government of Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser, leading to self-exile in Europe. He was the recipient of high civil honors from multiple countries, including the Egyptian Order of Merit and the French Legion of Honour. He was one of only 25 grantees of UNESCO's Sergei Eisenstein Medal, in recognition of his significant contributions to world film and cultural diversity.On July 10, 2015, less than six months after his former wife's death at the same age, Sharif died after suffering a heart attack at a hospital in Cairo. Her father was renowned Kurdish artist Mohamed Hosny, a pioneer in Arabic and Islamic calligraphy. Her half-sister Nagat El Saghira is a famous singer. Soad’s career began at a young age and her talents were first noticed by author Abdelrahman El Khamissy. She's one of the most influential actresses in the Middle East and North Africa and is known as the "Cinderella of the Screen". Hosny appeared in no less than 9 movies listed in the "Top 100 Egyptian films", compiled in 1996 in celebration of the centenary of Egyptian cinema.Soad was known for her versatility as an actress and her ability to play a wide range of characters, from comedic and lighthearted roles to dramatic and tragic ones. She was also known for her singing, which was featured in many of her films. Due to illness, she retired from acting in 1991 at just 48. Hosny's final screen appearance was in The Shepherd and the Women (1991), directed by her ex-husband, Ali Badrakhan. She starred alongside Ahmed Zaki in the TV series "Hekayat Howa wa Heya" (1985), a show that tackled social issues such as gender inequality. She received numerous awards in her career for starring in movies such as Sunset and Sunrise (1970), Where Is My Mind (1974), A Dinner Date (1981), and many other films.Some consider her to be the only actress that rivaled Faten Hamama as the best Egyptian actress of the 20th century. She can be seen in her best form in Cairo 30 (1966), Too Young for Love (1966), Al Karnak (1975), Watch Out for Zouzou (1972), and Youssef Chahine's The Choice (1971). In 2001, Soad Hosny died after falling from the balcony of her friend's apartment in London; the real cause of her death is still unknown. She remains engraved in the Egyptian film industry and the hearts of many until today.

Youssef Chahine (born in Alexandria, Egypt, 1926) started studying in a friars' school and then turned to Victoria College until High School Certificate. After one year at the University of Alexandria, he moved to the U.S. and spent two years at the Pasadena Play House, taking courses on film and dramatic arts. After coming back to Egypt, cinematographer Alevise Orfanelli helped him into the film business. His film debut was Baba Amin (1950): one year later, with Son of the Nile (1951) he was first invited to the Cannes Film festival. In 1970, he was awarded a Golden Tanit at the Carthage Festival. With Le moineau (1973), he directed the first Egypt-Algeria co-production. He won a Silver Bear in Berlin for Alexandria... Why? The same year he started writing The Emigrant (1994), a story inspired by the Biblical character of Joseph, son of Jacob. This had long been a dream project, and he finally got to shoot it in 1994. In 1997, 46 years and 5 invitations later, he was again selected Hors Competition in Cannes with Destiny (1997).

In the 1970s, he starred in the hit play "Madrassat Al Mashaghbeen" (Mischief at School), which screened from 1971 to 1975. Afterwards, he did "Al Wadd Sayyid Al Shaghal," which screened from 1985 to 1993. Imam has had one of the longest acting careers. More recently, he starred in "The Yacoubian Building," adapted from Alaa Al-Aswany's celebrated novel. The film, a poignant piece of social commentary, is known to be the highest-budgeted film in Egyptian cinema history. In 2012, an Egyptian court convicted Imam for defamation of Islam (not the first time this has happened). The films targeted in this particular case were "Al Irhabi" (The Terrorist) and "Al Zaeem" (The Leader) in which he satirizes Arab autocratic rulers. Imam, however, won his appeal against the conviction. In 2000, the United Nations named him a Goodwill Ambassador for UNHCR.
