Istanbul(1964)

13min | Documentary
3.5/5 (with 3 votes)

All of Pialat's Turkish films are uniquely interested in the country — especially Istanbul — as it was, not just as it is at the precise moment that Pialat is filming it. History informs these films in a big way, with the voiceover narration (which incorporates excerpts from various authors) introducing tension between the images of the modern-day city and the descriptions of incidents from its long and rich history. Istanbul is probably the most conventional documentary of Pialat's Turkish series, providing a general profile of the titular city, its different neighborhoods, and the different cultures and ways of living that coexist within its sprawling borders. As the other films in the series also suggest, Pialat sees Turkey, and Istanbul in particular, as a junction point between Europe and the East, between the old and the new, between history and modernity.

Directed by Maurice Pialat

The Human Scale(2012)

1h 23min | Documentary
3.2/5 (with 11 votes)

50 % of the world’s population lives in urban areas. By 2050 this will increase to 80%. Life in a mega city is both enchanting and problematic. Today we face peak oil, climate change, loneliness and severe health issues due to our way of life. But why? The Danish architect and professor Jan Gehl has studied human behavior in cities through 40 years. He has documented how modern cities repel human interaction, and argues that we can build cities in a way, which takes human needs for inclusion and intimacy into account.

Directed by Andreas Dalsgaard - With Jan Gehl

Antarctic Cities(2021)

As military conflict between Antarctica and The Democratic People's Republic of Absynia grows more and more likely, a young married couple plan to attend a rally supporting peace between the two empires.

Byzance(1964)

11min | Documentary
3.2/5 (with 6 votes)

Byzance uses a text by Stefan Zweig to describe the Ottoman conquest of the city in 1453. Before he turned to feature filmmaking in 1968 with Naked Childhood, Pialat worked on a series of short films, many of them financed by French television. Byzance is one of Pialat’s six Turkish shorts.

Directed by Maurice Pialat

The City of Cassiano(1991)

26min | Documentary

A short documentary about the works of Cassiano Branco, a modernist architect from Portugal.

Slums: Cities of Tomorrow(2014)

1h 21min | Documentary
3.0/5 (with 1 vote)

One billion people on our planet—one in six—live in shantytowns, slums or squats. Slums: Cities of Tomorrow challenges conventional thinking to propose that slums are in fact the solution, not the problem, to urban overcrowding caused by the massive migration of people to cities. (Lynne Fernie, HotDocs)

Directed by Jean-Nicolas Orhon

Madonna: Ray of Light(1998)

5min | Music
4.5/5 (with 1 vote)

A day in the life of Planet Earth and how quickly the world is rushing toward the end of the 20th century. Directed by Jonas Åkerlund, "Ray of Light" shows scenes from different cities around the world, with Madonna juxtaposed and singing the song in front of them. The music video was created for the second single from the album of the same name and was inspired by Godfrey Reggio's film, ????????????????????????????????????????????????????. Like Reggio’s film, “Ray of Light” also features fast-moving, blurred images of citizens from multiple countries living their normal, everyday lives.
