Der siamesische Nationalheld Naresuan wächst in der zweiten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts als Kind in burmesischer Gefangenschaft auf und organisiert in späteren Jahren den Widerstandskampf gegen Burma, dem nicht nur Thailand seine selbständige Existenz zu verdanken hat.
Thailand im 16. Jahrhundert. Prinzessin Suriyothai heiratet des Friedens willen den Sohn eines anderen Stammeskönigs, obwohl sie eigentlich einen anderen Krieger liebt - doch diese Liebe ist ihr verboten. 20 Jahre lang opfert sich Suriyothai zum Wohle des Staates und der Menschen auf. Sie zieht Kinder groß, deckt Mord und Intigen innerhalb des Herrschergeschlechts auf und zettelt sogar eine Revolution an, um eine böse Königin zu stürzen, die sich an die Macht gemordet hat. Im Jahr 1549 jedoch kommt es zum Krieg mit den Burmesen. Und wieder opfert sich Suriyothai ihrem Volk, doch diesmal ist der Preis höher.
Viele Jahre sind vergangen, als der zwischenzeitlich erwachsen gewordene Naresuan in seine Heimatstadt zurückkehrt. Doch der so hoffnungsvoll bestimmte Erbe des Throns Ayudhyas muss sich den Machtgefechten seiner Nebenbuhler stellen, welche drohen das Königreich zu erschüttern. Naresuan wird auf die Probe gestellt und beweist seine Fähigkeiten, als es ihm gelingt, den Shan-Staat zu erobern. Doch damit zieht er die neidische Feindseligkeit des Kronprinzen auf sich und die angespannte Situation eskaliert. Als nur noch Mord und Totschlag das Königreich regieren, kommt es zum Tod des Königs, dessen Aufgabe Naresuan nun übernehmen muss.

Somsri is a teacher in one of Bangkok's slums, teaching the slum kids as best she can in a beat up old building with no budget for equipment or books etc. At the time the film was made (or is set), 1/5th of Bangkok's population was apparently living in slums. Somsri is also the leader of a slum committee, organized primarily to fight the property development company that is trying to evict the people from their homes. Somsri is idealistic, proud and strong-headed and determined to organize the residents and fight the company every step of the way. Unfortunately, many or most of the residents are reluctant to fight, accepting the idea that as slum people they have no rights and can't possibly win against a big corporation. The fight is a difficult one as the company is not afraid to use nasty tactics against the people that stand in the way of their profits.
A 13-year old girl is infected with the AIDS virus following a bad blood transfusion. She then becomes the unwilling pawn in a battle between two politicians over government investments to prevent the spread of the virus.
