Auch keine Lösung des biographischen Rätsels, sondern eine Abfolge von Impressionen, in denen das Glück so nahe ist wie die Verzweiflung. Nebenbei, in der ungewöhnlich gestalteten Beziehung zu Bruder Theo, ein Essay über das Verhältnis zwischen Kunst und Markt. Und eine Eigeneinschätzung.

Der katholische Dorfpriester Donissan versucht, nach mittelalterlichem Vorbild das Leben eines Heiligen zu führen: Er fastet, trägt Bußgewänder unter seinem Talar und geißelt sich. Sein Vorgesetzter, der Dekan Menou-Segrais, hält voll väterlicher Sorge den Eiferer zur Mäßigung an, ist andererseits aber auch fasziniert von der Kraft und Inbrunst des jungen Mannes, in dem er ganz besondere Gaben, wenn nicht gar eine Berufung zu erkennen glaubt. Bei einem einsamen nächtlichen Fußmarsch begegnet Donissan einem reisenden Pferdehändler, der ihn zu einer Abkürzung überredet. Aber der Fremde führt den erschöpften Priester nur immer tiefer in die Einöde und offenbart sich schließlich als Satan.
