In der Kolonialzeit war Kolumbien zuletzt Teil des spanischen Vizekönigreichs Neugranada. 1810 erlangte dieses seine Unabhängigkeit von Spanien. Die Demokratie in Kolumbien gilt schon lange als angeschlagen und leidet seit Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts unter bewaffneten Konflikten. Bei der Präsidentschaftswahl 2022 wurde mit Gustavo Petro zum ersten Mal in der republikanischen Geschichte Kolumbiens ein Linker zum Präsidenten des Landes gewählt, seither hat sich die Lage bezüglich Demokratie und Menschenrechte wieder verbessert.
