Keine 24 Stunden sind vergangen, seitdem John (Kyle Chandler) seinen Bruder Danny (Ben Mendelsohn) ermordet hat, da steht auf einmal sein Sohn vor der Tür, von dem niemand etwas wusste. John, Meg (Linda Cardellini) und Kevin (Norbert Leo Butz) sind vorerst skeptisch. Letzten Endes müssen sie jedoch der Wahrheit ins Auge blicken: Ihr ungeliebter Bruder fällt ihnen selbst nach seinem Tod zur Last.
Anlässlich des 45. Jubiläum des Hotels seiner Familie kehrt Danny (Ben Mendelsohn) in seine Heimat auf die Florida Keys zurück. Er ist das schwarze Schaf der Familie Rayburn. Folglich wissen weder seiner Eltern, Robert (Sam Shepard) und Sally (Sissy Spacek), noch seine Geschwister, John (Kyle Chandler), Meg (Linda Cardellini) und Kevin (Norbert Leo Butz), wie sie mit der Situation umgehen sollen. Kaum ist Danny zu Hause angekommen, wird die Familie von ihrer Vergangenheit eingeholt. Auslöser ist ein Unfall, der die angespannte Situation beinahe zum Eskalieren bringt.
