Big Bird and his Sesame Street friends are mysteriously expelled from their neighborhood, finding themselves in Manhattan. They team up with a plucky history show host Sally Hawthorne who’s on a quest to save her show and prove that Sesame Street actually exists, with obstacles created by the “evil” Mayor, with reasons of his own for keeping Sesame Street hidden from the world.
Elmo liebt seine blaue Kuscheldecke mehr als alles andere auf der Welt. Als ein Gerangel mit seiner besten Freundin Zoe dazu führt, dass seine Decke in Grummelland, dem ekelhaftesten Ort der Welt, landet, muss Elmo diesen schrecklichen Ort aufsuchen, um sie zurückzubekommen. Elmo geht mit seinen Freunden Bibo, Bert und Ernie und der gesamten Bande der Sesamstraße in die stinkende Unterwelt von Grummelland und kämpft gegen die Müll-Königin (Vanessa L. Williams) und den niederträchtigen Huxley (Mandy Patinkin), der mit seiner riesigen Flugmaschine, dem Huxocopter durch Grummelland düst und alles aufsaugt, was nicht niet- und nagelfest ist, darunter auch Elmos Decke. Als ihm sein egoistisches Handeln klar wird, nimmt Elmo all seinen Mut und seine Entschlossenheit zusammen und tritt Huxley entgegen, um seine Decke zu retten und den Fehler bei seiner Freundin wiedergutzumachen.
Big Bird is sent to live far from Sesame Street by a pesky social worker. Unhappy, Big Bird runs away from his foster home, prompting the rest of the Sesame Street gang to go on a cross-country journey to find him.
Big Bird and his Sesame Street companion, Barkley, the big, fluffy dog, travel across China in search of the legendary Feng Huang, the Phoenix Bird. Along the way they visit with Chinese schoolchildren, watch a Tai Ji demonstration, learn some Chinese words and songs, and meet the mischievous Monkey King.
