Der Sträfling Tray wird nach 15 Jahren Haft wegen guter Führung entlassen. Nun kehrt er in eine Welt zurück, die sich radikal verändert hat. Unter anderem ist „sein“ Stadtteil Brooklyn jetzt ein Wohnort für wohlhabende New Yorker. So etwa für seine Ex-Freundin Shay, die mit ihrem wohlhabenden, weißen Lebensgefährten die Zwillinge großzieht, von denen Tray nie erfahren hatte, dass er ihr Vater ist. Da Tray seinen Kinder nahe sein und sie finanziell unterstützen will, aber keine Möglichkeit hat, einen regulären Lebensunterhalt zu bekommen, wendete er seine Überlebenstechniken aus dem Gefängnis an, um sich durchzuschlagen.
