Im Januar erscheint in der iranischen Zeitung Ettelā'āt ein Artikel über Ruhollah Chomeini, der bis dahin im Land totgeschwiegen wurde. In Afghanistan, dem nordöstlichen Nachbarland Irans, wird im April innerhalb der Saurrevolution Präsident Mohammed Daoud Khan vom Militär gestürzt. Die neuen Machthaber, darunter Nur Muhammad Taraki rufen am 30. April die Demokratische Republik Afghanistan aus und bringen das Land auf einen radikal-sozialistischen Kurs.
