Der schwarzweiße Stummfilm basiert auf dem gleichnamigen Roman von Edward Bulwer-Lytton aus dem Jahr 1834. Die Handlung spielt in den letzten Tagen Pompejis vor dem Ausbruch des Vesuv im Jahr 79 n. Chr.
In Nacht und Eis stellt szenisch die Ereignisse vom Untergang der Titanic dar. Menschen betreten im Hafen das Schiff. Die Titanic läuft aus. Der Kapitän übergibt das Kommando an den ersten Offizier und begibt sich zu den Gästen unter Deck, wo ausgelassen gefeiert wird. Als der Matrose einen Eisberg sieh, ist es schon zu spät. Obwohl der Kapitän das Kommando übernommen hat kann ein Zusammenstoß nicht mehr verhindert werden. Die Titanic sinkt.
79 AD. In the city of Pompeii the young Glaucus loves beautiful Jone, although he's courted by Giulia and secretly loved by his blind slave Nidia. One day Glaucus is wrongly accused of murder by a priest of Isis, Arbace, who wants to marry Jone and please Giulia. Glauco is condemned to be devoured by lions in the arena of the city, on that very day the erupting Vesuvius.
