Schon als kleiner Junge ist Harold (Lloyd) ein Weichei. Er läßt sich von Mädels den Lutscher klauen und in der Schule von kleineren Jungs das Pausenbrot abnehmen. Natürlich ändert sich das auch alles nicht, als er endlich erwachsen wird. Der inzwischen 19-jährige Harold versucht, die Gunst eines hübschen Mädchens zu gewinnen, allerdings hat er einen Nebenbuhler, der keinen Trick ausläßt, um Harold loszuwerden - und schließlich sogar zur Gewalt greift. Da bietet sich Harold die Chance, endlich zu beweisen, daß er doch ein echter Kerl ist. Mehr oder weniger durch Zufall wird Harold zum Hilfssheriff befördert und soll den gefürchteten Vagabunden einfangen, der seit einiger Zeit die Stadt unsicher macht. Ausgerechnet der große Feigling Harold zieht nun mitten in der Nacht los auf Verbrecherjagd. Das kann kaum gutgehen...

Doch das Ungeschick kennt keine Grenzen - schon bald findet sich der arme Buster inmitten einer Polizeiparade wieder. Und was die freundlichen Herren Polizisten wohl mit dem Tolpatsch anstellen, läßt sich leicht erahnen...
