Der Südsudan (englisch South Sudan, in amtlicher Langform Republic of South Sudan (RoSS); deutsch Republik Südsudan) ist ein Binnenstaat in Ostafrika. Er grenzt im Norden an den Sudan, im Osten an Äthiopien, im Südosten an Kenia, im Süden an Uganda, im Südwesten an die Demokratische Republik Kongo und im Westen an die Zentralafrikanische Republik. Seine Hauptstadt ist Juba. Aufgrund des von 2013 bis 2018 dauernden Bürgerkrieges und dessen andauernder politisch-gesellschaftlicher Verwerfungen ist der Südsudan heute als zusammengehöriges, souveränes Staatsgebilde allerdings nicht mehr existent. Das Gebiet war von 1972 bis 1983 und erneut von 2005 bis 2011 eine autonome Region innerhalb des Sudans. Am 9. Juli 2011 erlangte der Südsudan die Unabhängigkeit vom Sudan. Der Südsudan ist eines der ärmsten Länder der Welt. Durch die autoritäre Regierung kommt es regelmäßig zu schwerwiegenden Verletzungen der Menschenrechte. ()
