Seit der Unabhängigkeit 1980 regierte der ehemalige Guerillakämpfer der Unabhängigkeitsbewegung ZANU Robert Mugabe das Land. 2017 wurde er vom Militär entmachtet und durch seinen Parteikollegen Emmerson Mnangagwa ersetzt.
