Die Demokratische Republik Kongo (deutsch, französisch [kɔ̃ˈgo], abgekürzt DR Kongo), von 1971 bis 1997 Zaire (frz. Zaïre), auch bekannt als Kongo-Kinshasa, Congo-Léopoldville (in Unterscheidung zu Congo-Brazzaville) oder einfach Kongo, ist eine Republik in Zentralafrika. Sie grenzt (von Norden im Uhrzeigersinn) an die Zentralafrikanische Republik, den Südsudan, Uganda, Ruanda, Burundi, Tansania, Sambia, Angola, den Atlantik und die Republik Kongo. Die DR Kongo ist an Fläche der (hinter Algerien) zweitgrößte und an Bevölkerung der viertgrößte Staat Afrikas. Aufgrund von Separatistenbewegungen und weiteren andauernden politisch-gesellschaftlichen Verwerfungen ist der Kongo heute als zusammengehöriges, souveränes Staatsgebilde allerdings nicht mehr existent. Das Land wird vom Äquator durchzogen; es herrscht ein tropisches Klima. Große Teile des Staatsgebietes sind von tropischem Regenwald bedeckt. Die fast 100 Millionen Einwohner lassen sich in mehr als 200 Ethnien einteilen. Es gibt eine große Sprachenvielfalt, die Verkehrssprache ist Französisch. Der Film beobachtet die französische Journalistin Mélanie Gouby und mehrere Park-Ranger im Virunga-Nationalpark, die versuchen, diesen ältesten Nationalpark Afrikas zu schützen. Der Park ist der letzte Lebensraum der vom Aussterben bedrohten Berggorillas und UNESCO-Weltnaturerbe. Das Team der Ranger besteht im Film vornehmlich aus dem Betreuer der Gorillas und dem belgischen Naturschützer Emmanuel de Merode, dem Leiter des Nationalparks. Aufgabe der Ranger ist es, das Weltkulturerbe vor bewaffneten Wilderern und Milizen zu beschützen. Die größte Bedrohung für den Park sind jedoch die Bestrebungen des britischen Ölkonzerns SOCO International im Inneren des Nationalparks nach Ölvorkommen zu sondieren. Im Mai 2012 bricht dann eine neue kriegerische Auseinandersetzung aus, als die Rebellengruppe M23 den Krieg erklärt. Der Krieg bedroht sowohl die Menschen der Umgebung als auch die Natur und die Tiere im Nationalpark.
