Romantische Komödie aus dem Jahr 1939 mit politischem Hintergrund von Ernst Lubitsch mit Greta Garbo in der Hauptrolle. Es geht um russische Kommunisten, französische Kapitalisten und ein Wirrwarr, das durch eine Liebesbeziehung entsteht.
Eve Peabody, ein Revuegirl aus Indiana, ist hinter dem Geld der Männer her, jedoch hat das Glück sie gerade verlassen. Nachdem sie an den Spieltischen von Monte Carlo ihr letztes Geld verloren hat, kommt sie nach Paris mit nichts als dem Goldlamekleid, das sie am Körper trägt, einem Pfandschein, einem letzten Centime und ihrer Geistesgegenwart. Mit dem festen Vorsatz, sich in der Pariser High Society einen Platz zu verschaffen, blufft sie sich ihren Weg in eine Abendgesellschaft, wo sie sich als „Baroness Czerny” ausgibt. Ihre Maske wird von einem der Gäste, Georges Flamarion, durchschaut; er bemerkt aber gleichzeitig ihre Wirkung auf Jacques Picot, den Liebhaber seiner Frau, und heckt einen Plan aus, mit Hilfe von Eve, Jacques und Helen auseinander zu bringen. Während einer Wochenend-Party auf dem Landsitz der Flamarions beglückwünschen Georges und Eve sich, wie gut der Plan zu funktionieren scheint. „Nicht vergessen”, sagt Eve zu ihm „für jedes Aschenbrödel kommt eine Mitternacht.”.
Die junge, aufgeweckte Polly Parrish arbeitet über die Weihnachtstage als Aushilfe in einem Merlin’s Departement Store. Als sie gerade auf dem Weg zur Arbeit ist, sieht sie eine Frau, die gerade dabei ist, ihr Kind vor einem Waisenhaus auszusetzen. Doch die Mutter flüchtet und einige Passanten beschuldigen Polly, dass sie ihr eigenes Kind aussetzt. Trotz aller Proteste erklären die Behörden Polly zur leiblichen Mutter. Auf der Arbeit sorgen die Vorkommnisse für einen kleinen Skandal, da sie weder einen leiblichen Vater, noch eine Heiratsurkunde vorweisen kann. Mit der Zeit entwickelt Polly echte Gefühle für ihr Kind. David Merlin, der Sohn des Firmeninhabers, entwickelt seinerseits Gefühle für Polly und die beiden kommen sich näher. Sehr zum Ärger des Vaters von David, der glaubt, dass sein Sohn der eigentliche Vater des Kindes ist.
Einem berufsbedingt mit dem Gesetz in Konflikt gekommenen Privatdetektiv gelingt auf dem Transport ins Gefängnis die Flucht. Er gerät an eine abenteuerlustige Schriftstellerin, die sich ihm bei seiner Suche nach einem Mörder aufdrängt, bis er seine Unschuld ebenso wie die seines Mandanten beweisen kann.

Nicky Nelson is a fast-talking sideshow barker with a wax-and-alive concession on Atlantic City's boardwalk. Even with the band of his friend, struggling musician Gene Krupa, playing on the sidewalk to attract the customers, "The Living Corpse" and other low-rent acts aren't enough to lure the seen-it-all boardwalk strollers, and the landlord closes the show in lieu of never-paid rent. Nicky, always promoting, goes to Stephen Hanratty, head of the pier's Dance Pavilion, to plug Krupa's band as an attraction, but Hanratty won't even listen to them. But, while there, he meets singer Lily Racquel, who knows he is a phoney but might have the ability to to talk a radio-station manager into giving her an audition. She gives him a ring to help finance the project; he promptly loses it in a crap-game.
Sky and Linda meet on vacation and become engaged. When Sky introduces Linda to his best friend, Jeff, Linda and Jeff fall in love and marry. But Jeff's work puts a strain on the marriage and a divorce is planned. Sky uses an experimental memory loss drug to make Linda and Jeff forget their rough times (and the fact that they were married) and they fall in love all over again.
