Stop Making Sense(1984)

Die 1984 von den Talking Heads im Pantage Theatre von Los Angeles gebotene Show gehört zum Besten, was der Rock in jenem Jahr zu bieten hatte. David Byrne steht mit seinem wilden Gesang und seiner höchst eigenen Körpersprache ganz im Mittelpunkt. Er torkelt auf der Bühne herum, als würde er in jedem Augenblick fallen, bewegt seine Beine, als wären sie aus Gummi. Regisseur Jonathan Demme verzichtete auf die üblichen Klischees des Genres und konzentrierte sich darauf, das Publikum zu fesseln. Die Zuschauer sehen nicht einfach einen Film, sie finden sich in einem Rockkonzert wieder, klatschen laut nach jedem Song, tanzen auf den Stühlen und vor der Leinwand herum. Ein echter Höhepunkt der Musikgeschichte.

"Streetwise" porträtiert das Leben von 9 Straßenkindern in Seattle im Jahre 1984. Die Situation, in der die Kinder überleben, ist unfassbar und abstoßend. Man wundert sich, wie grauenvoll ihr Zuhause wohl gewesen sein muss, dass sie dieses miserable Leben auf der Straße vorziehen. Viel zu jung sind sie einem verwahrlostem Erwachsenen-Leben am Rande der Existenz ausgeliefert. Sie kommen aus kaputten Familien, sind oft Opfer von Scheidung und Gewalt. Sie wissen nicht wohin, haben niemanden, an den sie sich wenden können. Sie leben in einer schäbigen Welt, auf der Suche nach Liebe und Glück - in einem Umfeld, das beides nicht kennt. Diese Dokumentation erzählt aber auch, wie die Gesellschaft mit dem so genannten "Abschaum der Menschheit" umgeht. Und trotz all der unsäglichen Tristesse ist dieser Film witzig, einfühlsam, zärtlich und manchmal sogar aufmunternd. Kenner bezeichnen ihn als die bedeutendste Dokumentation, die je gedreht wurde.

Gaza Ghetto: Portrait of a Family, 1948 – 1984 is a documentary film about the life of a Palestinian family living in the Jabalia refugee camp. The film, created by Joan Mandell, Pea Holmquist, and Pierre Bjorklund in 1984 is believed to be the first documentary ever made in Gaza. The film features Ariel Sharon, Binyamin Ben-Eliezer and soldiers on patrol "candidly discuss[ing] their responsibilities." The film follows a refugee family from the Gaza Strip who visit the site of their former village, now a Jewish town in Israel. As the grandfather and great-grandfather point out an orchard and sycamore fig that belonged to Muhammed Ayyub and Uncle Khalil, an Israeli resident appears and tells them to leave, claiming they need a permit to be there. The mother tells him that, "We work in Jaffa and Tel Aviv and that's not forbidden," to which he replies, "Here it's forbidden.".
