Nachdem sich seine Hoffnungen, im Rahmen der Französischen Revolution die Unabhängigkeit seiner Heimat Korsika erreichen zu können, zerschlagen haben, trägt Napoleon mit zur Eroberung der aufständischen Hafenstadt Toulon bei, die sich mit den Engländern verbündet hatte. In den Wirren der Nachrevolutionszeit landet er vorrübergehend im Gefängnis, macht sich dann aber 1796 als Oberbefehlshaber der Armee auf, Italien zu erobern.
