Wann auch immer der Pfarrer seine Kamera aufbaut, muss er feststellen, dass er sich letztlich kein Bild von dem Land und dessen Bewohnern machen kann, weil Menschen und Natur sich ihm entziehen. Zudem führt seine Unkenntnis der isländischen Sprache zu Komplikationen. Je tiefer er in die unberührte gewaltige Landschaft vordringt, desto mehr kommt er von seiner Mission ab und handelt nicht mehr nach den Grundsätzen seines Glaubens. Am Ziel angekommen, scheint Lucas sein moralisches Gleichgewicht völlig zu verlieren. Inmitten einer von Mythen und Märchen besetzten Landschaft wirkt das Holzkreuz nur noch absurd.
